Yes, but “free” covers three different things: free to start, a free score, and a free full report. Almost every online IQ test is free to start; they differ in what you get at the end. A test you can trust on price tells you before the first question what is free and what is not. Below are five questions that tell you in a minute, and what a free test can and cannot do for you. Want to start straight away? Take the free IQ test: it is free to take and needs no account to start.
What “free” can mean for an IQ test
Short answer: a free IQ test is one where you know in advance what you get without paying. The word on the start button tells you little; what matters is what happens at three moments.
- Free to start. You can answer the questions without paying. This is true of nearly every online IQ test, so on its own it does not mean much.
- A free score. After the last question you see a result without first entering payment details. This is where tests differ most.
- A free full report. A breakdown by ability, a printable report or a certificate. Many providers charge for this part, which is fair enough as long as they say so up front.
The moment that annoys people is not paying for something. It is spending twenty minutes on puzzles and only then finding out what the result costs. Any test can avoid that by stating its terms before the first question, and that is the first thing to look for.
Five questions to ask before you start a free IQ test
These five questions work on any online IQ test, including ours. Read the start page and the terms with them in mind, and you know within a minute what the test will cost you in money and in data.
- Does the page say, before question one, what is free? Starting, the score and the report: you should know about all three before you begin.
- Can you see a result without entering payment details? If a card form appears between the last question and your result, the test was free to take, not free to finish.
- Is any payment one-off or recurring? Look for “trial”, “membership”, “renews automatically” or a price “per week” or “per month”. Read those terms before you type anything into a payment form, not after.
- What do you give instead of money? An account, an e-mail address or a phone number is also a price. Check whether you need one to start, and what the site says it will send you.
- Does the test explain how it scores you? An IQ only means something on a scale with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15, compared with a stated group of people. If the page says nothing about how the number is calculated, treat it as a number, not a measurement. How IQ tests work explains what a scoring method should cover.
Free online test, paid online report, psychologist’s assessment
There are roughly three ways to get an IQ score. They differ less in price than in what you can do with the outcome.
| Free online test | Online test with a paid report | Assessment by a psychologist | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you pay | Nothing | One-off or recurring: read the terms first | Varies by practice and country: ask in advance |
| What you get | A score or an estimated range | A score plus a report, profile or certificate | A supervised test, a written report and usually a feedback session |
| Time | A few minutes to about half an hour | A few minutes to about half an hour | Usually an hour or more of testing, plus the appointment |
| Accepted for school, work or a diagnosis | No | No | Yes |
Note the middle column. A paid online report is not automatically a more accurate measurement than a free score: what you pay for is usually the presentation, not a better test. Accuracy depends on the number and quality of the items, the time limit and the norm group, which is the subject of are online IQ tests accurate?
We give no price for a psychologist’s assessment on purpose. Fees vary widely between countries and practices, and a figure without a source would not help you. When you ask for a quote, ask which test is used, whether the feedback session and the written report are included, and whether your school, employer or insurer covers any of it.
How to check your IQ by yourself
Short answer: take one timed online test with enough questions, in one sitting, without help, and read the result as an estimate with a margin of error. That gives you a fair idea of where you stand; it does not give you a number an institution will accept.
To get the most honest estimate from a self-test:
- Pick a test with at least 25 timed items and a stated scoring method. Shorter quizzes can only give a wide range.
- Do it once, rested, somewhere quiet, on a screen big enough to see the puzzles clearly, with notifications off. Set aside the full stated time; see how long an IQ test takes.
- Do not look things up or ask for help. The score is only meaningful if you produced every answer yourself.
- Count your first attempt. Taking the same test again soon after usually raises the score by a few points through familiarity, not ability.
- Read the score as a band. A good online test is accurate to roughly ±5 points, a short quiz to ±10. What a score in each band means is in what is a good IQ score?
What a self-test cannot tell you. Nobody watched you take it, so it cannot rule out distraction, fatigue or help. It is not normed for your exact age group the way a professional test is. And it cannot be used for a diagnosis, a school placement, a giftedness assessment or admission to a high-IQ society. For any of those you need a supervised test with a licensed professional.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a truly free IQ test?
Yes. Many online IQ tests are free to take, and some also show a score at no cost. The honest ones state before the first question what is free and what, if anything, costs money, so check the start page and the terms before you begin.
Is there a free way to test IQ?
Yes: a free online IQ test with timed questions and a stated scoring method gives you a reasonable estimate in under half an hour. It is an estimate, not a formal measurement; for a result that counts at a school, an employer or a doctor you need a psychologist.
How can I check my IQ level by myself?
Take one timed online test with at least 25 items, in one sitting, rested, without help, and count your first attempt. Read the score as a band of about ±5 points rather than an exact number.
Is a free IQ test accurate?
It can be. Price says little about accuracy: a free test with enough well-made, timed items and a stated norm group can be as good an estimate as a paid one, while a ten-question quiz is a rough guess whatever it costs. No online test replaces a supervised assessment.
