A professionally administered IQ test (WAIS, Stanford-Binet) takes 60 to 90 minutes across 10–15 subtests. Mensa’s supervised admission test takes about two hours including instructions. Online tests are shorter: our quick test takes about 6 minutes, the standard 25-question test about 8 minutes for the median taker, and the Mensa-style matrix test has a 25-minute limit. In our data, people who finished the 25-question test in 3 to 8 minutes scored highest; rushing it in under 3 minutes cost about 17 points on average.
Professional tests: an hour or more
The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-IV) has ten core subtests and takes 60–90 minutes with a trained examiner. The Stanford-Binet 5 is similar, 45–75 minutes depending on age and how far the adaptive routing goes. The length is not padding: each subtest targets a different ability (vocabulary, matrix reasoning, digit span, processing speed, block design), and the full-scale IQ is only as good as its weakest subtest.
Some subtests are strictly timed, some are not. Block Design and Symbol Search award bonus points for speed; Vocabulary and Information do not. That mix is deliberate: it lets the test separate people who think fast from people who think deeply, and report both.
Mensa and other supervised tests
Mensa’s own admission session in most countries runs about two hours, of which the test itself is 45–90 minutes depending on the battery used. Each section has a strict time limit, and unanswered items simply score zero, so pacing is part of the skill being measured. Practice helps mainly with pacing, not with the underlying ability — more on that in how to prepare for an IQ test.
Online tests: 6 to 25 minutes
Online tests trade breadth for convenience. The three lengths on this site are a direct example of the trade-off:
- Quick IQ test — 15 picture puzzles, about 6 minutes, reports a likely IQ range rather than a single number because 15 items cannot pin a score down more precisely.
- Fast & Accurate IQ test — 30 puzzles with up to 60 seconds each (30 minutes at most), an IQ with a confidence interval.
- Full IQ test — 45 puzzles, about 20 minutes, the narrowest interval plus a five-domain profile.
The standard 25-question test gives you 45 seconds per question; a question you do not answer in time counts as wrong. The Mensa-style matrix test gives 25 minutes for 35 puzzles. Neither should be taken with the TV on; the timer is there so that everyone is measured under the same conditions.
What our data says about speed
In the 2026 data study of 3,834 completed standard tests, time taken was strongly related to the score, but not in a straight line:
| Time taken | Average IQ | Tests |
|---|---|---|
| Under 3 minutes | 99.6 | 117 |
| 3–5 minutes | 117.1 | 361 |
| 5–8 minutes | 115.4 | 1,463 |
| 8–12 minutes | 114.1 | — |
| 12–20 minutes | 114.8 | — |
The median taker needed 7 minutes 58 seconds; 48% finished in 3 to 8 minutes. Finishing in under three minutes was associated with answering only 41% of items correctly, which looks like guessing rather than brilliance. Taking longer than eight minutes did not help either: the extra time went to the hardest items, which have the lowest hit rate whatever you do. The practical lesson is the one examiners give in person: work steadily, do not agonise over one item, and do not sprint.
How long should you plan for?
For any online test, set aside the stated time plus five minutes, on a desktop or a phone held steady, with notifications off. For a supervised test, plan half a day: registration, instructions, the test itself and a break. If you are taking a test for a decision that matters (a school placement, a diagnosis, a job), the length of the test is a feature. A 10-minute quiz cannot deliver a number anyone should act on, and a serious provider will say so.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the Mensa IQ test?
The supervised admission session takes about two hours in most countries; the test items themselves take 45–90 minutes. Mensa’s free online practice tests take 15–25 minutes.
Is it better to finish an IQ test quickly?
No. In 3,834 tests on this site, people who finished the 25 questions in under three minutes averaged 99.6, against 117.1 for those who took three to five minutes. Speed beyond a steady pace costs points.
Do IQ tests have time limits?
Almost all do, either per subtest or overall. Untimed tests exist but measure something slightly different (power rather than speed) and are less common.
Can I pause an online IQ test?
On this site the timer keeps running, which is deliberate: a pause would make results incomparable. Start when you have the full time available.
